Shades we know today were first created way back in 1936 by none other than Ray Ban. The reason is known as "aviator sunglasses" is because they were developed specifically for pilots already in 1936. Pilots need a good anti-glare sunglasses, and Ray-Ban design satisfied this requirement perfectly.
The design that Ray Ban came up with was actually modeled directly from the glasses worn by the U.S. Army at the time. Since the aviator's debut, has remained virtually unchanged in design and are becoming standard issue for military pilots from around the world.
Perhaps more interesting is how aviation shades literally took off with the public (no pun intended).
Ray Ban started selling aviator sunglasses to the public year after they were created in 1937. Over the years many different companies started to produce his own pilot shades - Both the title and no name brand sunglasses.
Different technologies have also come into vogue ... Some stay and some of them go. For example, have you seen those mirrored aviator glasses that were popular in the movie Top Gun? It is technology, all their own.
Even different lenses are sometimes used, but glass is still the most popular. Perhaps the biggest change was all the different colors come out. Blue, purple and pink are just some of the colors, you can now find being sported sunglasses air.
Celebrities have also been building up this reputation as the shades of late - many of the biggest stars can be seen wearing.
All of the above combined have contributed to the huge success of aviator sunglasses. We can only expect them to become even more popular in the near future.
